Swahili Translation

English to Swahili Translation Projects

We assist organizations with documentation or marketing material (e.g. brochures, manuals, website content, PowerPoint presentations, product labeling, etc.) that are written in Swahili and require accurate translation into English.

Of course, in addition to English to Swahili and Swahili to English translation assignments, we can also assist you with the translation of the world's most popular languages to and from Swahili: Arabic ↔ Swahili; Spanish ↔ Swahili; French ↔ Swahili; German ↔ Swahili; Italian ↔ Swahili; Portuguese ↔ Swahili; Russian ↔ Swahili; Japanese ↔ Swahili; Chinese ↔ Swahili; Hindi ↔ Swahili; to name but the most popular... We can source translation expertise for virtually any language pair.

Swahili Language Style

Our translators, editors and proofreaders render well-written and clearly understandable texts. We place a high value on rendering a finished product that is faithful to the language style of the original text.

Swahili to English Translation Projects

We assist businesses in finding the best available Swahili to English language translation resources – including experienced Swahili language translators (native-speaking Swahili if appropriate or required).

In our experience, a Swahili language native-speaker may not necessarily be the right translator for the job. (See: Common myths and misconceptions about translation.) Though a native-speaker may be preferable for certain translation assignments, having Swahili as a native language may not 'translate into' Swahili language expertise (pun intended). An experienced linguist with strong Swahili and English language translation credentials, in-depth experience and professional credentials, regardless of native language, may often prove to be a better choice.

Identifying and securing the services of the appropriate Swahili language resources is what we do! (Refer to our Swahili translation assignment process for information on our Swahili translation project management process).

In a nutshell, we use professional translators who have a solid mastery of the Swahili language (grammar, spelling, cultural nuances) and a solid understanding of the subject matter.

Once we are confident that the appropriate freelance resources have been identified and certain that we can honour the project deadline, we submit a quote for the translation assignment.

If we cannot secure the appropriate resources, we will do our best to refer you to Swahili translation sources of information that we have confidence in.

The Swahili Language Landscape

Population of Congo (Democratic Republic of): 66,514,506 note: estimates for this country explicitly take into account the effects of excess mortality due to AIDS; this can result in lower life expectancy, higher infant mortality, higher death rates, lower population growth rates, and changes in the distribution of population by age and sex than would otherwise be expected (July 2008 est.)

Languages: French (official), Lingala (a lingua franca trade language), Kingwana (a dialect of Kiswahili or Swahili), Kikongo, Tshiluba

Internet country code: .cd

Internet users: 180,000 (2006)

Swahili (called Kiswahili in the language itself) is the first language of the Swahili people (Waswahili), who inhabit several large stretches of the Indian Ocean coastline from southern Somalia to northern Mozambique, including the Comoros Islands. Although only 5-10 million people speak it as their native language, Swahili is a lingua franca of much of East Africa and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is a national or official language of four nations, and is the only language of African origin among the official working languages of the African Union.

Swahili is spoken natively by various groups traditionally inhabiting about 1,500 miles of the East African coastline. About 35% of the Swahili vocabulary derives from the Arabic language, resulting from the fact that the language evolved through centuries of contact between Arabic-speaking traders and many different Bantu-speaking peoples inhabiting Africa's Indian Ocean coast. It also has incorporated Persian, German, Indian and English words into its vocabulary due to contact with these different groups of people. Swahili has become a second language spoken by tens of millions in three countries, Tanzania, Kenya, and Congo (DRC), where it is an official or national language. The neighboring nation of Uganda made Swahili a required subject in primary schools in 1992 – although this mandate has not been well implemented – and declared it an official language in 2005. Swahili, or other closely related languages, is also used by relatively small numbers of people in Burundi, Rwanda, Mozambique, Somalia, and Zambia, and nearly the entire population of the Comoros.
